Scottish Christian Democrats Welcome Cardinal O'Brien's Bar to Abortion Supporting Politicians

Christian Democrats in Finland wish all the best to our sister party,
CPA, for great success and many breakthroughs in the coming elections.
We hope that voters in Scotland are supportive of our common Christian
Democratic principles and we especially recommend CPA to any voters of
Finnish origin.

4th June 2007
The Christian Peoples Alliance party is welcoming the statement by Scotland's Roman Catholic primate that Catholic politicians who support abortion should not be able to receive Holy Communion. The Head of the Roman Catholic Church in Scotland, Cardinal Keith O'Brien, makes his call in an address today in Edinburgh. He will also urge voters not to support those politicians who support what he calls 'a social evil'.
Commenting, Leader of CPA Scotland, Teresa Smith from Dumfries said:
"The Cardinal is right to speak up for those without a voice in this debate, the thousands of unborn children whose lives are terminated each year in Scotland through abortion. This is not just a matter for the 'private' views of politicians, but the public good of our country in defending the weak. "
Cardinal Keith O'Brien will also urge politicians not to co-operate in the "unspeakable crime of abortion". Earlier this week, official figures revealed that the number of abortions carried out in Scotland is continuing to rise. There were 13,081 abortions performed in 2006, compared with 12,603 the previous year, according to the Scottish health statistics. The rate is highest among women aged between 16-19 (24.1 per 1000) and those aged between 20-24 (23.6 per 1000).
Teresa Smith added:
"Scotland needs a clear voice of Christian conscience in politics, which is the primary reason CPA Scotland fought the parliamentary elections earlier this month, to give voters a choice. There is a culture of death dominant in our secular parties which has to be challenged. In drawing attention to the Cardinal's warning to Catholic politicians, we must not lose sight of his message to the Christian faithful that they have to use their votes responsibly. For our part, we are committed to earning their trust and future votes."
At the elections earlier in May, CPA Scotland received the backing of both Scottish Catholic Bishops and numerous Christian Democrat politicians across Europe.
